The Library Association of Ireland (LAI) is the professional body representing libraries and librarians in Ireland. One of its main objectives is to promote and develop high standards of librarianship and of library and information services in Ireland.
The Association now has two Education Committees, one dealing with Professional Standards which takes responsibility for the various forms of accreditation, such as Associateship and Fellowship and articulates core competencies for professional librarians and information scientists as well as liaising with other Irish Bodies responsible for the award of qualifications and analogous International Bodies with a view to formalising mutual recognition of professional accreditation.
The second Education Committee deals with Continuing Professional Development. This Committee is responsible for promoting and managing accreditation of LAI recognised courses as well as raising awareness of the value of LAI accreditation through liaising with groups and sections and other bodies involved in CPD, maintaining a calendar of CPD events and facilitating and supporting research in the CPD needs of librarians and information professionals.
