Cataloguing and Metadata Group workshop – How to Create a Taxonomy

This course is aimed at information professionals who have to organise and categorise information as part of their work. This may mean constructing a taxonomy for materials on an institutional repository, development of a file plan for records management or creation of a navigable structure for a website or intranet. The one-day course will use different types of classification system and will be based on exercises to practice and develop skills for creating classification systems.

By the end of this course participants will have:

• considered the main types of information taxonomy

• practised developing a simple classification scheme

• used classification principles to develop a thesaurus

• gained an understanding of the context in which taxonomies are used

• explored opportunities for taxonomy development

• reviewed software tools for taxonomy development
