What is Graphic Medicine?
Graphic Medicine is about Stories! Stories challenge us, they comfort and change us for the better. Because we are changed by what we see. Just as we are changed when we are seen. Graphic Medicine is a relatively new interdisciplinary field which draws together cartoonists, healthcare practioners, scholars, patient, librarians, people with disabilities, family members and the general public to explore the role the medium of comics can have in improving the understanding practice, and sense of patient agency in relation to health, medicine and disability.
Comics are multi-modal they can combine different kinds of messages, they can surprise, confound and instruct. Through dynamic combinations if images, words, and symbols, comics can teach us to reflect upon, and question cultural norms and the ways we perceived health and well being
Those interested in medical humanities as a way to represent the human stories of healthcare as well as those interested in visual methods of communication and understanding
